IaaC 3rd Advanced Architecture Contest - The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia and HP are pleased to announce the 3rd Advanced Architecture Contest, on the theme of THE SELF-SUFFICIENT CITY: Envisioning the habitat of the future.

The aim of this architecture competition is to promote on-line discussion and research through which to generate insights and visions, ideas and proposals that help us envisage what the city and the habitat of the 21st century will be like.

The contest is open to architects, planners, designers and artists who want to contribute to progress in making the world more habitable by developing a proposal capable of responding to emerging challenges in areas such as ecology, information technology, socialization and globalization, with a view to enhancing the connected self-sufficiency of our cities.

The prize (Total value: 60.000, 00 EUR) will be distributed at the discretion of the Juries following the bases scheme.

This Architecture Competition Jury, which is composed of architects, directors of some of the world's foremost architecture schools, and mayors of prominent cities around the globe is looking for outstanding proposals for any city in the world, at any scale, and within any timescale.

The competition prizes will consist of three scholarships for the IaaC Masters in Advanced Architecture for academic year 2010-11, cash prizes, and the latest generation of large-format HP printers. The selected projects will go on show in a major exhibition, due to open in Barcelona in May 2010, which will then travel to key cities around the world. The best projects will also be featured in a book to be published by Actar. The project is supported by the Spanish Ministry of Housing, the Generalitat de Catalunya, Barcelona City Council, and the publishing house "Actar".

Envisioning the Future of Jakarta
International Architectural and Urban Design Competition

The International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR) 2009 in collaboration with Ikatan Arsitek Indonesia (Indonesian Institute of Architects Jakarta Chapter) is pleased to announce an idea competition on the theme of ‘gotong royong city’ in the context of the extended metropolitan region of Jakarta. Three winning entries will be selected by an international jury for exhibition in the IABR 2009 and awarded prizes totaling 7,000 Euros.

The competition is open to all professionals and students in architecture, urban design and related disciplines. Entrants are encouraged to form inter-disciplinary teams including sociologists, artists, planners, anthropologists, engineers, economists etc.

The aim of the WA Community Awards is to highlight and publish remarkable projects that might otherwise remain unnoticed by the international public but have the potential to inspire exciting questions about contemporary architectural discourse.

Awarding follows a most democratic procedure where all member’s ratings and the votes of all Honorary Members are effective in the final decisions.

Registrations are completely FREE so that all architects can participate both as candidates and judges.

Architects from ALL countries can submit ALL of their buildings (realized or not) for the appreciation of the WA Community. Recent projects (not older than 10 years) will have more chances to be shortlisted for the Awards. Students, landscape architects, engineers may also submit for the awards projects they are the author of: we do not check or accredit diplomas.

What improvements can be made to the site and surrounding areas to reinforce the library's critical role as the "center" of town and source of local pride?

Intent

The intent of this "Ideas" competition is to:

Broaden the field of ideas through bold clear concepts (similar to a sketch problem charrette) for the restoration and expansion of the library building
Point out the complexities and opportunities that are inherent when adding on to an historically and aesthetically significant building by a renowned architect of the 19th century
To raise the awareness of this beautiful piece of architecture for the people of Woburn and others

This is an IDEAS competition only. The winner of this competition does not get the commission for the actual project. 2009 AIA Ideas Competition

"The invisibility of our modernist tradition to the general consciousness puts an entire and vital period of our heritage at risk," wrote Arleyn Levee, one of those who tried to save the house, in an e-mail. "We need to find some way to highlight this current disaster and turn it around into a positive learning case study."

The AIA Committee on Design (COD) invites architects, students, and allied design professionals to submit sketches to the international 2009 COD Ideas Competition, titled "Listening to the Past, Looking to the Future: A House for Today." In this unique sketch competition, submitters are asked to explore the legacy of modernist design through a concept design problem.

Winners will receive funding to attend the COD Spring Design Conference in Boston and have their work exhibited at the 2009 AIA National Convention in San Francisco. Selected entries will be displayed on the AIA Web site.

TU DELFT Ideas Competition

On 13 May 2008, the Faculty of Architecture of the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) was unexpectedly reduced to ashes by a devastating fire.
It was shocking to see how this sturdy building, which was full of valuable collections and always bustling with activity, turned out to be so vulnerable.
Both in a material and an emotional sense, the fire was undoubtedly a major loss.
The fire shook the foundations of the Dutch architectural community. Nevertheless, this community soon joined forces to set to work again.
The Faculty of Architecture in Delft was already renowned the world over for its decisive, innovative and pragmatic approach.
And it is precisely thanks to this characteristic attitude that the Faculty’s sorrow regarding the loss was coupled with an enthusiastic and unflagging energy to enter a new phase. Indeed, the loss of the faculty building also offers new opportunities.
Opportunities to take a fresh and critical look at the education of the future, opportunities to realise a modern, innovative and refreshing design for the university building, which can hold its own in terms of power and presence with the well-known Bouwkunde building from the years of Van den Broek and Bakema.
Precisely because it intends to realise this specific ambition, the Faculty of Architecture has decided to organise an open international ideas competition, in preparation of a project competition for the new faculty building in 2009.

Dubai is a city that has become the center of discussion and discourse across the globe as the post 20th century city and urban model. The international architectural / urban competition, Du(b)ailities: Supra_global_culture / icro_ethnic_localities, aims at intensifying and enriching this exchange by inviting young architects and students of architecture from the UAE and across the world to participate and present visions, concepts and proposals for Dubai. The Fondazione La Biennale di Venezia strongly believes in the younger generation, in its creative talents and the force of its ideas.

Throughout the years this conviction has been translated into dedicated initiatives and projects. On the occasion of the 11th International Architecture Exhibition (Venice, September 14th > November 23rd, 2008) this conviction is represented by the Everyville online competition, an extraordinary opportunity for university students from around the world to be directly involved in the organisation of the Venice Biennale.

The competition calls for the preparation of an idea-project based on the theoretical-critical text written by the curator of the 11th International Architecture Exhibition, Aaron Betsky. However, this time the element of challenge and stimulation lies in the fact that the works selected by a prestigious Jury will become an integral part of the 11th Exhibition, to be presented in a dedicated section.

The competition thus represents a unique opportunity and an unrepeatable occasion to present your work, coupled with the satisfaction of presenting it during what is now considered to be the most important architectural exhibition in the world.

any university in the world who have not graduated at the time of 1st January
2008, as well as to graduates of any discipline that in the course of 2008 are

Conceptual Competition: ACCESSIBLE LUXURY

Consorzio P.M.I scarl, Agenzia Di Promozione del Mobile Imbottito (Agency for the
Promotion of Upholstered Furniture), is holding a competition for young designers
under 40 years of age.
(publication drafted in accordance with the international regulations developed in
collaboration with ICOGRADA, ICSID, IFI; with the sponsorship of ADI - Associazione
italiana per il Disegno Industriale [Italian Industrial Design Association] – Tuscan Delegation)
For some years now we have been experiencing a phenomenon that can only be defined
as “accessible luxury”; that is, a return to investment in tangible, traditional goods, with
furnishings and the home in general taking first place.
In line with this trend, the organizers are pleased to invite “under-40” designers and
architects to participate in a conceptual competition addressing this interesting cultural
and market reality.

Art. 1 Aim of the Competition

Consorzio PMI hereby calls a contest for design of products for the home living
area.
The category includes numerous furnishing/decorating products, from the sofa, the principal
point of reference, to an entire series of complements, from armchairs to rugs, from
wall units to occasional furniture and tables to picture frames, lamps, etc.
The salient project elements, beyond innovation, must be careful selection and attention
to materials, finishings, color schemes, surfaces: all aspects that contribute
to characterizing the concept of luxury, as called for by the competition theme statemen

Art. 2 Composition of the Jury

The jury will be composed of at least seven individuals, each with voting rights:

Art. 4 Prizes

The total amount of the prize monies is ¤euro 10.000,00 (ten thousand euro)
To authors of the first three winning projects will go:
1st prize euro 5,000.00 (five thousand euro)
2nd prize euro 3,000.00 (three thousand euro)
3rd prize euro 2,000.00 (two thousand euro)

The authors of the first 10 selected projects will be invited to visit the production district
The commission will select 50 designs for display at a special competition exhibition
Competition activities will include realization of several pre-competition prototypes.

Should the competition conclude without a ranking and without winners, due to there
being no suitably meritorious projects, the jury may, at its final discretion, divide the prize
money as it sees fit and distribute same among the designers whose projects it feels are
worthy of special mention.
The promoter hereby stipulates that the entire amount of the prize money be in any case
distributed and that no recourse for (any) withholding provided for by law will be admitted.

Art. 5 Requirements for Participation

Participation in the competition is open to subjects born subsequently to 1 January
1968 who meet the requirements set forth below:

a) Italian and/or foreign designers, architects, and engineers duly registered with their
respective professional associations, independent designers, and designers working
in a subordinate capacity if duly authorized by their companies.

b) students enrolled at the Faculties of Architecture or Engineering or in a design institute.
Teams of competitors from both categories may participate; in this case, the team must
appoint a team leader who will be the sole person in charge and the referent for dealings
with Consorzio PMI. Participation by members of the Jury, their family members, and
employees of Consorzio PMI is expressly prohibited.

Art. 6 Novelty of Projects

The projects submitted to the competition must be never before published and developed
expressly for the competition. Any disputes concerning the originality of the projects shall
be submitted to the Design Jury for settlement.

Art. 7 Plans – Project Material

For each project, the contestant/s must submit no. 2 or more plates (mounted on stiff
backing), 50 x 70 cm in size, containing at least one technical drawing in an adequate
scale illustrating the project as a whole and the construction details.
Color may be used. Together with the plates, the contestant must submit a short report
describing the project motivations and characteristics, including a description of the
materials and any other data felt to be pertinent and useful; said report must be submitted
in A4 format and must not exceed three single sides.
Contestants are granted the faculty to illustrate their projects with other drawings or images,
which must in any case be contained in the plates as described above or in the report.
Each plate and the report must be marked with the identification code that will be sent
to each participant by email after he/she has submitted the completed online registration
form, available at the competition website (see Art. 8).
All the material submitted must also be copied onto a digital CD in .pdf and/or .jpg
format.

Art. 8 Identification and Confidentiality

Each participant must submit two sealed envelopes, with no distinguishing signs on the
exterior except for the designations “Envelope A” and “Envelope B”.
Envelope A must contain:

- the form containing the personal data of the project author/s;
- self-certification with attached copy of the participant’s identification card guaranteeing
under his/her own responsibility that the project submitted is an new, original work made
by the participant him/herself and that said project in no way infringes on any prior
author’s rights;
- a statement granting the consortium the right of option, for the duration of one year from
the date of the minutes of the jury, and the guaranteeing participant’s commitment to
assume responsibility for any consequences resulting from legal actions brought by third
parties concerning the originality of the project/s.
Envelope B must contain:
- the technical project as explained in Art. 7 above, with indication of the identification
code received by the participant by email following registration at
www.toscanadesigncompetition.it

Art. 8-bis Competition Procedure

At the time of the competition, the envelopes marked “B” will be opened first to permit
examination and evaluation of the submitted projects.
The envelopes marked “A” will be opened only after the projects have been judged.
We hereby invite all those interested in participating to register and to fill in and submit
the competition forms, available at the competition website .

Art. 9 Use Rights

Consorzio PMI reserves the right of option on use of the projects submitted to the
competition, for a period of one year from the date of the minutes of the jury session.
During this period, PMI will decide whether or not to put the articles into production; in
that case, economic relations with the designer/project author will be governed by a
specific contract drafted in observance of ADI valuation criteria.
Consorzio PMI herewith agrees not to modify any submitted project in any manner,
without the express consent of the project author.
Participants enjoy the faculty to protect their works by registration or patent. ADI offers
project authors who wish to so protect their works the opportunity to register their projects
with the “Project Register” at especially favorable conditions.

Art. 10 Deadlines

All project material must be delivered in unmarked (anonymous) packaging, no later than
5:00 p.m. on 30 June 2008, by postal delivery and/or courier service, with advice
of receipt, to:

The Competition Secretariat guarantees that project acceptance will be treated anonymously.
Should delivery be made by means of carriers (postal service or private courier), the
material must be sent by the above-mentioned date and time (as attested by the postmark
or delivery note). Material arriving, due to shipping delays, later than 10 days from the
date established for delivery cannot be accepted.

Art. 11 Results Information and Publication

Consorzio PMI hereby pledges to present the initiative in the national press and publicize
and valorize the results of the competition in the manners it feels most suitable.
All participants hereby authorize PMI to display their projects at an exhibition which, if
held, will be held no later than 31 December 2008.
The participants also hereby authorize PMI to publish their projects in a catalogue, book,
and/or in the specialized press, if so decided; the participants shall be entitled to no
remuneration for this service beyond mention of the author’s/authors’ names.
Participants not receiving awards are hereby nevertheless granted the faculty to request,
within 15 days from communication of the results of the competition, that their works not
be published/exhibited.
Consorzio PMI will communicate the results of the competition by email within 30 days
of the end of same and will notify the ten winners by registered letter.

Art. 12 Return of Contest Materials

All the materials relative to projects not awarded prizes may be picked up by the authors
at Consorzio PMI from 30 November through 23 December 2008.
Upon expiry of said term, the trustee shall be implicitly authorized to not preserve any
materials still in their possession and to proceed with destruction of same.
The materials relative to winning projects will be retained by PMI until the expiry of the
option period granted them, except by different agreement among the parties.

Ecohouse Student Design Competition 2008

You are invited to design an ecohouse (floor area 120 sq metres approx) for up to six persons on a site of your choice.

Your design should be in a community context and should:

Minimise the use of the earth's resource water, fossil fuel energy, materials and their maintenance for the life of the building.
Adopt slow building principles.
Be full of delight.

The scheme should be designed to be extremely robust and resilient and last till at least the end of the century and through an age of increasingly extreme weather events and rising energy prices, it should demonstrate all year round comfort. Consider carefully all aspects of energy use in your scheme.

Registration

Registration is compulsory.

All Entries will be received by 24 June 2008. Judging will take place in early July and winners notified within 3 working days. Winning and highly commended candidates will be invited to a prizegiving which will take place at the Oxford Conference: Resetting the Agenda for Architectural Education 22-23 July 2008.

Requirements

Entries should be on 2 x A1 sheets which use clear graphics to illustrate the benefits of your design.

Please include the following using diagrams where possible.

A statement of concepts which can include dreams and precedents.
An analysis of the climate you are building in describing local aspects of temperature, wind and water resources.
An analysis of the site in terms of benefits of orientation, topography and ground conditions shown on the sheets.
A review of any local sources of materials and energy production
A statement of the main design strategies for the design in terms of the reduction of energy use. Consider these under requirements for heating, cooling, ventilation, lighting, water usage, occupiers' needs.
A description of how this house could be replicated to form an urban community.
A series of drawings, sketches, images, photos of models etc that illustrate spaces in use and their delight.

Competition FAQs

I am currently doing Part 1/2/3 with a practice, am I eligible for the competition?
Yes, provided you are currently enrolled with a university, and provide the university name.

Is there any limit to the numbers of team members?
There is no limit.

Is it OK for team members to be from different universities?
Yes, this is fine, but please state the university names.

Can students be of any discipline?
Although the competition is aimed at architecture students, entrants may be from any discipline.

Does the entry have to be situated in a real site, or can the site be invented?
You do not have to use a specific site, but if entrants do 'invent' one they need to go into plenty of detail about the area, landscape, surroundings, climate etc.

Project Aim

The Workspace Group Urbantine Project® emerged from the realization that there are limited opportunities for unrecognized architects to showcase their ideas three-dimensionally. Tent London’s fast architecture competition seeks to redress this issue, affording the winning entry the chance to put their design in front of the world's press and the industry’s most influential players during London Design Week at Tent London, Truman Brewery, Brick Lane. The winning entry will also have the opportunity to engage with an organisation, Workspace Group, which aims to provide progressive, appropriate, affordable and considered workspace accommodation for London’s creative industries.

Project Brief

We want you to tackle the issue of rapid change in the 21st century workplace, such as the phenomenal rise in the use of digital technology and its impact on our work and office environments. Tremendous claims are made as to its possible effect on our communication, social interaction, mobility, productivity and creativity.

Working lives: Do these developments really enable us to maximise our potential or do they make our lives over-complicated?

Working tools: Is design practice becoming excessively computer-reliant or does this technology radically transform the way we shape our world?

Write a short scenario and respond to it through your design for a physical installation or pavilion to be constructed within a £10K budget in one of the Tent London buildings at the Truman Brewery during London Design Week. Maximum dimensions: 6m L x 5m W x 4m H. The structure should provide a space that the public can interact with. Innovative material and creative assembly concepts, such as modularity and preassembly, will be valued. You must be able to assemble your structure in 48 hours and disassemble it within 24 hours, ready for repeat use to enable future exhibition opportunities.

Judging Criteria

A design which demonstrates your solution to the brief.
The illustrated ability of the designer or practice at the application stage to produce a professionally presented 1:1 scale installation within a £10K budget.

Prize

£10K materials, construction & disassembly budget.
Free venue for 4 days at Tent London, Truman Brewery, Brick Lane.
Access to over 35,000 designers and architects during the London Design Festival.
