International Architecture Contest for the development of designs for two Benetton multistorey buildings in Teheran



Designing in Teheran is an international contest open to creatives, designers and architects, who are called upon to develop a design for two multistorey buildings, hereafter A and B, set in the Iranian city of Teheran.

Prizes :

The total prize money is Euro 30,000.00 for each building.

The winner for A and the winner for B will be awarded Euro 20,000.00 each.

The remaining two finalists for each building (four finalists), will be awarded Euro 5,000.00 each.

Should the contest, for any reason, end without a classification of merit or without winners, the Jury will divide the total prize money between the designs considered worthy of recognition. If the same person wins for both A and B, the prize money will be combined.

The aim of the WA Community Awards is to highlight and publish remarkable projects that might otherwise remain unnoticed by the international public but have the potential to inspire exciting questions about contemporary architectural discourse.

Awarding follows a most democratic procedure where all member’s ratings and the votes of all Honorary Members are effective in the final decisions.

Registrations are completely FREE so that all architects can participate both as candidates and judges.

Architects from ALL countries can submit ALL of their buildings (realized or not) for the appreciation of the WA Community. Recent projects (not older than 10 years) will have more chances to be shortlisted for the Awards. Students, landscape architects, engineers may also submit for the awards projects they are the author of: we do not check or accredit diplomas.

(All projects submitted OR UPDATED by their architects after 24 October 2008 will be evaluated for the 3rd Cycle.)

The Challenge

• How would you provide 25,000 square feet of additional space for the library and the services required in the 21st century?
• How does this additional space impact and/or relate to the original building?
• What improvements can be made to the site and surrounding areas to reinforce the library's critical role as the "center" of town and source of local pride?

Intent

The intent of this "Ideas" competition is to:

• Broaden the field of ideas through bold clear concepts (similar to a sketch problem charrette) for the restoration and expansion of the library building
• Point out the complexities and opportunities that are inherent when adding on to an historically and aesthetically significant building by a renowned architect of the 19th century
• To raise the awareness of this beautiful piece of architecture for the people of Woburn and others

This is an IDEAS competition only. The winner of this competition does not get the commission for the actual project. These ideas are to be shown to the selected architect that will be chosen through a standard public selection process. The competition entries become the property of the Woburn Public Library on submittal.

"The invisibility of our modernist tradition to the general consciousness puts an entire and vital period of our heritage at risk," wrote Arleyn Levee, one of those who tried to save the house, in an e-mail. "We need to find some way to highlight this current disaster and turn it around into a positive learning case study."

The AIA Committee on Design (COD) invites architects, students, and allied design professionals to submit sketches to the international 2009 COD Ideas Competition, titled "Listening to the Past, Looking to the Future: A House for Today." In this unique sketch competition, submitters are asked to explore the legacy of modernist design through a concept design problem.

Winners will receive funding to attend the COD Spring Design Conference in Boston and have their work exhibited at the 2009 AIA National Convention in San Francisco. Selected entries will be displayed on the AIA Web site.

On 13 May 2008, the Faculty of Architecture of the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) was unexpectedly reduced to ashes by a devastating fire.
It was shocking to see how this sturdy building, which was full of valuable collections and always bustling with activity, turned out to be so vulnerable.
Both in a material and an emotional sense, the fire was undoubtedly a major loss.
The fire shook the foundations of the Dutch architectural community. Nevertheless, this community soon joined forces to set to work again.
The Faculty of Architecture in Delft was already renowned the world over for its decisive, innovative and pragmatic approach.
And it is precisely thanks to this characteristic attitude that the Faculty’s sorrow regarding the loss was coupled with an enthusiastic and unflagging energy to enter a new phase. Indeed, the loss of the faculty building also offers new opportunities.
Opportunities to take a fresh and critical look at the education of the future, opportunities to realise a modern, innovative and refreshing design for the university building, which can hold its own in terms of power and presence with the well-known Bouwkunde building from the years of Van den Broek and Bakema.
Precisely because it intends to realise this specific ambition, the Faculty of Architecture has decided to organise an open international ideas competition, in preparation of a project competition for the new faculty building in 2009.

Dubai 2A International Architectural Students and Young Architects Competitiion 2008

Dubai is a city that has become the center of discussion and discourse across the globe as the post 20th century city and urban model. The international architectural / urban competition, Du(b)ailities: Supra_global_culture / icro_ethnic_localities, aims at intensifying and enriching this exchange by inviting young architects and students of architecture from the UAE and across the world to participate and present visions, concepts and proposals for Dubai. By doing this, the city and its inhabitants, will have the chance to be exposed to views about their city and benefit from the presented pro

posals.

The competition offers its participants two separate challenges: one for the larger city scale and the other for a smaller urban area. Solutions for both categories will create the basis of real proposals and possibilities for the city.

An international jury of professionals and educators will be drawn to assess the work, and award three prizes and an honorable mention for each of the two categories. The outcome of the competition will be exhibited, published, and shared with the international community, local universities and local authorities.
